today's subject is a small sheet of aluminum foil in the sunlight.

also, breaking from synthesizer sounds in favor of looped string samples of different lengths

the ambient sounds were taken from the camera mic while shooting the aluminum foil overcranked (slo-mo). I usually discard the audio track but this time I couldn't part with it.

most of this is a synth that I built from scratch in Pure Data. it's 100% performable and the audio-reactive spinning rings were captured in real time along with an improvised performance. I'm going to spend the rest of the day working the other sounds into the PureData patch to hopefully perform it w/ visuals live someday. It might not work out, but I'll try anyway.

Misun is doing her first stand-up comedy routine (in English, no less) and she needs some walk-on/off music. I asked her what sort of vibe and she said, like September by EWF. I breathed a sigh of relief. She could've said BTS. I don't hate BTS, but I'm about as far away from their target market as one can get and still be a living being. I'm somewhere near goldfish.

I'm NOT going to copy September, of course. I'm just going to have that vibe in mind. I'll aim in that direction and deliberately miss the bullseye. After all, she and I are now pretty much the target market for EWF these days. In some algorithm database in some data dungeon somewhere in Zuckerberg's bunker, our digital dossiers have EWF on them for sure. Where our dossiers differ is.. hers has some BTS and mine has things like Genesis, Mahler and Brian Eno.

was going to call this ikeda study 2, but then I thought.. not really. i'm using a pretty common digital filter that finds edges of brightness called sobel and I messed with it. if master Ikeda uses that too, it's not really a study if I do it my way, right? he didn't invent the sobel effect.. that was 2 guys named Sobel and Feldman in 1968. so i'm just calling it sobel with the strange underscore after it that I won't waste keystrokes justifying the use of. sorry if it bugs you. i like it.

note the nervous tone in my writing today. i've got my first opening as (officially) an audiovisual artist today and a gig tonight as a trumpeter of cumbias and mariachis, which is not a first. but it's a fully incredible day.

Ryoji Ikeda is a god in my world. I steal shit from him (stylistically) all the time these days and this one was a deliberate attempt to do something I saw of his. Of course it doesn't hold a candle to the master, and after a while of working with it, I stopped aping and started doing it as if it wasn't a study. So it's a study that left class early. But it still is clearly HOMAGE.

Mr. Ikeda just won the 9th Nam June PAIK Prize. I immediately thought, really? 8 artists before him? Now I have to go find them and rip them off too.

trying out new output formats: 

old: AAC 32bit constant audio and 720p video

new: linear PCM 32bit float-point audio and 1080p video 

instagram only accepts my old format audio, so that's an extra render for instagram instead of one size fits all

I'm still going to render with the high quality resolution and 32bit float-point audio for posterity..

and the future inclusion on big screen exhibitions (like tomorrow's exhibition!)

followup to the whole closing down music venues bc of an antiquated dancing law...

the national news this morning showed a top lawmaker clearly moved by the ridiculousness of this law and vowed to close that loophole for good. In the news spot they even showed the interior of Ovantgarde and did a closeup on the same sign that I took a picture of at that gig..

gotta gotta cut loose!
